The body of a 49-year-old man who had gone missing on the 4th of December was discovered in the Egnatia area of the River Evros.

The 49-year-old police officer had gone fishing near the estuary of Evros earlier in December, however the heavy rainfall and adverse weather conditions resulted in the river swelling.

Meanwhile, after 12 days of declaring a state of emergency due to the significant swelling of the River Evros, water levels are finally beginning to fall. The civil protection mechanism will remain on alert in order to prevent any floods along the river.

According to the Deputy District Governor Dimitris Petrovits the water levels at Pythio dropped to 5.5 meters, but in southern parts levels remain as high as 7 meters. Nevertheless, it appears that the water levels are gradually dropping.

Meanwhile the Greek agricultural insurance organization ELGA is documenting the damages caused by the floods and has received support from the District of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace to complete the documentation as soon as possible.

More than 110,000 acres of agricultural land have been seriously affected by the recent floods. The Minister of Interior recently announced to provide a 500,000 euro grant to help cover the damages caused by the adverse weather conditions.
