A 46-year-old fan is in a critical condition, after being gravely injured on Sunday in Nea Alikarnassos in Crete, for the Football League 2 match between local side Irodotos and Piraeus-based Ethnikos.

Based on eyewitness reports, clashes between the fans of the two sides broke out in the stands late in the second half of the game. The 46-year-old Ethnikos fan, Konstantinos Katsoulis, appears to have been viciously assaulted by a large group of people.

The unfortunate fan was rushed to the local Venizelio hospital with severe head injuries and internal bleeding. Doctors announced that his condition is critical and that he suffered a brain aneurism. The 46-year-old has since been transferred to an Athens hospital.

Another Ethnikos fan, a 37-year-old man, was also injured in the clashes, without however being in any danger. The police announced that is has already launched an investigation and detained numerous people and arrested a 27-year-old man in relation to the attack.
