A huge operation took place early today at the port of Kalamata, when a boat carrying 73 immigrants (44 men, 11 women and 18 children) from Syria arrived. The boat had run out of fuel and was tugged in by an Italian freighter and a Hellenic Coast Guard escort.

The rescued immigrants have been transferred to the Port Authority of Kalamata, where Red Cross volunteers handed out food and blankets. An interpreter has assisted in taking statements from the rescued immigrants and an investigation is under way. One man was taken to the local hospital for precautionary reasons.
