The Police announced that they have arrested 32-year-old Golden Dawn member Yannis Kazantzoglou on charges of being an accomplice in the murder of Pavlos Fyssas in Amfiali about two weeks ago. The police were lead to the 32-year-old after finding his mobile found in Giorgos Roupakias’ car. Kazantzoglou is thought to have been one of the passengers on the 17th of September.
Kazantzoglou was amongst the initial 32 Golden Dawn members who were arrested in the aftermath of Fyssas’ murder, but after testifying of his whereabouts in court, was set free on bail. The police now believe that Kazantzoglou was Roupakias’ shaved headed car passenger who assaulted a police officer before escaping.
According to Golden Dawn MP Yannis Lagos, Kazantzoglou is the “political activism supervisor” of the ultra nationalist party’s Nikea offices. The recorded phone calls that were made from Golden Dawn’s central offices indicate that Kazantzoglou played a part in the attack in Amfiali.
When the 32-year-old was taken in for questioning he claimed that he had been a Golden Dawn member since 2011 and on the day of the murder he met with Roupakias to hand out pamphlets of party leader Michaloliakos’ last-minute speech. He claimed that he forgot his mobile phone in Roupakias’ car, which he remembered the next day when his father told him about the murder.
