The charred body found in an abandoned car in the area Nova Iguacu of the city of Rio, Brazil, is being examined. The vehicle had been rented by the Greek ambassador in Brasilia Kyriakos Amiridis, who has gone missing.

The 59-year-old Amiridis was last in contact with his wife and was last seen in the rundown suburb of Nova Iguacu in Rio. Brazilian television station Globo reporting that the local police authorities believe the remains belong to the missing ambassador. Local media suggest that it is unlikely that the ambassador was kidnapped, as no ransom has so far been demanded.

Diplomatic sources told the Athens Macedonian News Agency that the Greek Embassy has requested from the Foreign Ministry of Brazil to proceed immediately with the autopsy of the charred body and to officially inform them as soon as the results are ready. The Foreign Ministry and the Greek Embassy in Brasilia are in close cooperation with the Brazilian authorities to proceed with the necessary actions to accelerate the course of the investigation to locate the Greek ambassador in Brazil.
