The nationalist slogans that a number of Special Forces operators chanted during the military parade for the War of Independence on Wednesday have prompted fierce reactions.

Specifically, during the parade in down town Athens Special Forces operators were heard chanting that “their dream” is “to enter Constantinople, raise a flag and chant [our] hymn”.

In its statement PASOK slammed the “irresponsible and haphazard” Minister of National Defense Panos Kammenos and demanded the punishment of “those who ‘allowed’ the Special Forces to dictate foreign policy and national security policy”.

Reactions also came from within SYRIZA, with MP Vasiliki Katrivanou arguing that the nationalist slogans on the national holiday were “a direct challenge against democracy” and urged the cleansing of the Armed Forces from “fascist and far-right enclaves that remain strong”.
