Prison inmate Nikos Romanos has been taken to the Korydallos Prison hospital on Thursday morning due to the deterioration of his health after ten days of being on a hunger strike. On Wednesday the prison council decided to reject Romanos’ application for an educational leave, citing an earlier rejection by Appeal Court Special Investigator K. Nikolopoulos.
During the hearing, the council member complained that Romanos was targeting them in his public statements, to which he responded that his aim was to complain about the violation of his rights. Romanos had been intentionally transferred from the prison in Malandrino in order to be able to attend his university courses.
Romanos, who was convicted over his participation in a double bank robbery, has gone on a hunger strike after being denied the right to attend a technical university course, despite being allowed to participate in entry exams. Romanos has vowed to continue his hunger strike.
