The former Prime Minister Giorgos Papandreou hinted towards the creation of a new party, asking his supporters to become active and begin a self-organizing on a grassroots level.

Mr. Papandreou also distanced himself from current PASOK leader Evangelos Venizelos dismissed his goal to turn the party into the “third pole” of the political system that would guarantee national stability. The former PM also rejected Mr. Venizelos’ efforts in developing the Democratic Faction. Instead, Mr. Papandreou stressed the importance in creating a “post-clientele Greece, a Greece of values”.

During his speech Mr. Papandreou opined that there were many people who still supported the values, history and strategic choices that PASOK made and that there was still a need for a party to promote progressive changes. He argued that “we must organize ourselves, network and not expect a solution from the indigenous or outside saviors”.

Finally, Mr. Papandreou underlined that there was still time to elect a new President, provided that national interests prevail and urged repeated an earlier proposal for the formation of a new government from the current Parliament which would carry out true, progressive and democratic reforms, address the country’s commitments and settle the public debt, implement a Constitutional Review and to make preparations for the transition to the post-bailout “next day”.
