Ten students were arrested in Igoumenitsa on Wednesday afternoon for participating in a school occupation. Similar arrests were made a high school in Lamia, prompting the Minister of Justice Charalambos Athanasiou to comment that “everything was in line with the law”.

According to the Efimerida ton Syntakton newspaper the ten students were prosecuted according to occupation legislation. The local teacher union (ELME) in Thesprotia condemned the police “raid” and announced that was going to discuss “the unacceptable actions of the two school principles” in their upcoming general assembly.

When questioned in Parliament by the KKE MP Yannis Giokas, the Minister of Justice defended the police arrests, arguing that the schools cannot shut down whenever a handful of students feel like it. Mr. Giokas claimed that the government is trying to criminalize popular struggles.
