The new 5-euro bank notes that have began circulating earlier this month are not recognized by ATMs and automated ticket vending machines of lines 2 and 3 of the Athens Metro. The problem appears to be with the new security measures.
According to technical support experts a software upgrade is required in order for the ATM and ticket vending machines to process the new 5-euro bank notes. The Metro management will have completed the software upgrade by early June, so until then the notes will only be accepted at staffed ticket vending booths.
