The greatest problem puzzling the tripartite government is the rampant unemployment rates. The official government line is that unemployment is a top priority; however it was recently revealed that the emergency private sector solidarity contributions worth 600 million euros have been diverted to covering budget shortfalls instead!
This revelation came from a non-paper of the OAED management addressed to the social partners in reference to find solutions to the unemployment issue. The opposition reacted intensely, with SYRIZA MP D. Stratoulis claiming it to be “a first class scandal” that mocks contributing employees and the unemployed.
Critical voices were also heard from DIMAR and PASOK circles; the two government partners claim were angered as they had invested a lot in combating unemployment, in order to justify their governmental support.
The Prime Minister met with Minister of Labor G. Vroutsis last night, however no official statements were made about measures to deal with unemployment. Mr. Vroutsis had however stated at an earlier time that the government can guarantees pensions and benefits, in any financial situation. This statement reveals the government philosophy.
Executives from the Ministry point out that while the 600 million euros were diverted elsewhere, the budget makes provisions for a regular 500-million-euro funding, in order to pay out benefits. Many social partners, such as GSEE and employer unions, feel that the money should be used for the purposes for which it was collected.
On his behalf, the OAED head Ilias Kikilias denies the existence of such a “non-paper”, however he does confirm that his organization is funded with 500 million annually.
