If Mr. Tsipras and his government want to preserve that last shred of dignity and seriousness, all that they have left to do is to cancel Sunday’s referendum now. The Prime Minister’s letter to the heads of the institutions that was revealed by the Financial Times on the one hand proves the dramatic impasse they have reached and on the other how they tragically trapped the Greek people in a pointless and divisive dilemma.

In his letter Mr. Tsipras accepts almost all of the proposals submitted by the European Commission with a few exceptions, which makes the question that the Greek people are called to answer on Sunday’s referendum pointless.

In face of the impasse they created in the country, the economy and society, the Prime Minister and his government appear to be led to a disorderly retreat in panic. Before the painful consequences are fulfilled, they should at least take the final step and avoid dividing the Greek people. They should call a session in Parliament today and cancel the referendum.

It is time to assume responsibilities, before the catastrophic consequences of the default are activated. It is also high time that the President of the Republic took the initiative and called the political leaders to arrange the necessary political developments to save the country, before it is too late.
