The Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Kotzias underlined the need to respect the outcome of the presidential elections in the USA, during the extraordinary EU meeting called in Brussels by High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini.

Major concerns were expressed at the meeting, particularly in relation to the effect the outcome of the election may have on bilateral relations and agreements with Iran and on tackling climate change.

According to the Greek Minister, the election result reflects the major structural problems faced in the USA, such as the ever-increasing pressure on the middle classes, marginalization of the working classes and sense of abandonment and defeat from globalization.

Mr. Kotzias argued that structural problems stemming from neoliberal and austerity policies lead to policy changes, adding that the Left offers an internationalist and pro-European solution. Furthermore, he explained, there is a sense among a large section of the American people that their country’s leading role in international politics is very expensive and under these circumstances cannot bear the burden alone.

Finally, the Foreign Affairs Minister estimated that the next American government will focus on finances and as such is likely to be less hostile towards Russia and may work towards restoring economic relations with China.
