The Regional Governor of North Aegean Christiana Kalogirou has warned that there is no more room for additional refugees on the existing organized hotspots on the islands.

In a letter to the Alternate Minister of Migration Yannis Mouzalas and the Alternate Minister of National Defense Dimitris Vitsas, Mrs. Kalogirou called argued that “the situation is causing concern” and called the government to urgently take action,

According to the Regional Governor there has been a gradual increase of refugee arrivals and that the maximum capacity of the three hotspots has already been exceeded.

Following the failed coup in Turkey, the agreement reached with the European Union on immigration is at risk, as Turkish authorities have withdrawn their officers from the islands.
