The President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos has expressed his opposition to the possibility of a referendum being carried out over the upcoming Constitutional review. Most of the opposition parties have also expressed their concern and opposition over such such a referendum.
According to a report in Ta Nea, President Pavlopoulos opposes such a referendum both for legal and political reasons, since it would result in a “violation and profound trivialization” of the Constitution. Given that the President is vehemently opposed to such a prospect, it appears unlikely that the coalition government will insist upon examining such options.
This is also evident by recent statements by the government spokesperson Olga Gerovasili, who although avoided outright stating that a referendum will not take place, underlined that the “constitutional review process will not be circumvented”.
