The Vice President of Parliament and SYRIZA MP Alexis Mitropoulos has urged his party’s leadership to take the initiative and attempt to bridge its differences with opposing voices “with unity and understanding”. Mr. Mitropoulos, who made the comments upon arrival at SYRIZA’s critical Central Committee meeting, conceded that “after the failure of negotiations the government must implement the most antisocial program”.

Mr. Mitropoulos argued that calls for expulsions from the party and for ‘rebel’ MPs to surrender their seat do not comply with the Left wing ethics. According to the VP, such practices have not occurred even in the most ‘degenerate versions’ of social democracy and European Communism.

Furthermore, he added that “the people want a consensus and to escape forwards”, while stressing that “we will only overcome the crisis with calmness, unity and understanding”.

In Thursday’s Central Committee meeting, party leader Alexis Tsipras will ask for an extraordinary party conference, which means that new delegates will be elected. Mr. Tsipras hopes that change will allow him to take greater control of his party. On the other hand, the Left Platform insists upon a standing conference, meaning that the delegates will be the same as in the party’s previous conference in 2013.
