The main opposition party New Democracy has accused the Prime Minister of hypocrisy for submitting to the creditor demands and proposing recessionary measures, despite his election campaign pledges.

Although New Democracy’s leadership is awaiting to see the final draft of the agreement between the Greek government and the country’s international creditors, it has nonetheless underlined that the measures proposed are so harsh that a conservative, right-wing government would “not dare” propose.

While there appears to be no question as to whether the proposed agreement will go through parliament – there are many opposition MPs who will vote in favor of the agreement, New Democracy estimates that it will not have the full support of SYRIZA and Independent Greeks.

As such, this development could mean that the coalition government loses its majority in Parliament, potentially prompting further dramatic political developments, such as snap elections.
