The Holocaust memorial in the northern Greece city of Kavala, which was unveiled about two weeks ago, was desecrated with blue paint in the early hours of Sunday. Municipal authorities have rushed to clean and restore the monument.

The memorial was erected in remembrance of the 1,484 Greek Jews who were murdered by the Nazi regime at the Treblinka concentration camp in Poland.

In response to the desecration, the Jewish Council issued a statement condemning the act and called the authorities to take appropriate measures against vandalism
