The inability to come to an agreement at yesterday’s Eurogroup does not leave much room for further opportunistic delays and impression games. The uncertainty and concern in Greece may lead to out-of-control situations, unless an agreement with the Europeans and IMF is reached in the next few days. The outflow of deposits has already reached a dramatic state, with the credibility of the banking system facing clear threats.

Even at the final moment, the government and the Prime Minister personally must take into account their huge responsibilities and take the necessary decisions and set aside the claims about so-called dark centers that cultivate fear and uncertainty. Their indecision and lack of courage has disorganized the economy and caused concern amongst the people.

In the few days until the emergency summit meeting on Monday, they must take advantage of every moment to bridge the gap with the creditors in order to put an end to the fear of a departure from the euro. The warnings from everyone, even those who were trying to help us at the last moment, leave no room for complacency and wasting time.

Greece can and must remain in the core of Europe. The people demand so, as indicated by the impromptu gathering in Syntagma on Thursday evening, despite the efforts of some to belittle it at first. Any other choice will be catastrophic for the country and society.

The Prime Minister and his government do not have the mandate, nor the capability to play with the future of the country and its people. They have a historic opportunity, even at the last moment, to align with the majority of the people who want to remain in Europe and take the necessary decision. They spent five months in an endless negotiation, lost all possible allies and now they must show to the people that they are brave enough to assume the cost of their choices.

The future of Greece, the economy and society are inseparable from Europe and the euro. The delusions must end now, today. Mr. Tsipras has until the summit meeting to decide if he will be the leader associated with the country’s new path or the return to the darkest moments in its history.
