The new revised national plan on waste management will soon be published for public debate, whereby municipal authorities will take over the responsibility of waste management. According to the plans, the authorities must draft waste management plans for within their limits.

The new plan gives greater powers to municipal authorities, encouraging them to escalate their efforts in recycling, while reducing the stress on central landfill sites, such as in Fyli, which receives waste from many areas in Greece.

Municipal authorities will be responsible for the full cycle of management and use of waste. This will allow municipal authorities to integrate waste management into social actions. Unemployed residents, for example, could undertake recycling programs.
