The sighting of a crocodile in Crete in the Potami Dam Lake near Rethymno has been confirmed and has since become a local sensation, with media naming him “Sifis” and fans even creating facebook pages.
While the origin of the crocodile is still a mystery it appears more than likely that the crocodile was an abandoned pet.
Local authorities in Crete are making arrangements in order to capture the reptile alive and move it to a safer location.
The mayor of Rethymno Giorgis Marinakis told To Vima that the area in the artificial river where “Sifis” was spotted has been cordoned off and on Thursday a herpetologist will be arriving in Crete to provide further assistance.
Meanwhile, local residents claim to have spotted a second crocodile in the area, with some inconclusive videos surfacing on social media. The herpetologist to arrive on Thursday will hopefully be able to confirm these sightings and dispel concerns of the crocodiles reproducing.
