According to a report by German magazine Spiegel, the American Embassy in Athens operates as a wiretapping center. The magazine based its report on NSA documents that were controversially publicized by former agent Edward Snowden.

The German magazine’s claim was reported in Ta Nea and revealed that aside from its special data collection unit, the American embassy also has specialized equipment for remote surveillance. This equipment is typically installed and concealed on the roofs of buildings.

The newspaper report suggests that the white construction on the southern corner of the American embassy’s roof, on the Petrou Kokkali Street side, conceals such surveillance equipment.
