A 53-year-old man and a 48-year-old woman were arrested in Ano Liosia on suspicion of being involved in illegal adoption and child abduction.
The police were alerted that a Greek couple in Ano Liosia had a child at its home and did not appear to be biological parents. The couple was detained when the police went to investigate the claim.
From the police investigation that followed it transpired that the couple bought the child in March from a Roma woman in Zefyri for 4,000 euros. The 48-year-old woman then unsuccessfully attempted to register the child as her own at the Municipality of Fyli.
The couple claimed that they went through with the illegal adoption because they were unable to have a child of their own. The prosecution has ordered that the child be taken to the Children’s Hospital for testing.
Later in the day, the couple will be taken to the Misdemeanor Courts of Athens to plead their case. The search for the child’s biological mother and the intermediary in the illegal adoption is still under way.
