The Prime Minister Antonis Samaras will head to Brussels today for the EU Summit where he has arranged a series of meetings with other European leaders to discuss the progress of the Greek economy.

These meetings will provide Mr. Samaras with the opportunity to initiate political negotiations, days before the troika representatives return to Athens. The Prime Minister will update his counterparts on his achievements (such as the primary surplus) and request that they fulfill their obligations.

Mr. Samaras will stress that the government is not in the position to take any further measure, responding to the frustration of European officials regarding the Greek government’s stance.

European Commissioner Olli Rehn noted that Greece will remain under fiscal supervision until it has paid back 75% of loans it has taken out from the Eurozone and EFSF. He also revealed that the fiscal and funding gaps will be discussed in December or January, while the debt sustainability will be examined in the summer.

The Minister of Finances Yannis Stournaras clarified that Mr. Rehn’s comment on supervision applies to all countries with bailout loans and claimed that it was more or less no different to the budget supervision of EU countries.
