The police are carrying out investigations in downtown areas of Athens, with a particular emphasis on the areas around Omonia Square and Agios Panteleimonas. The Minister of Public Order Nikos Dendias recently ordered an increase in police activity in order to restore the sense of security.
On Sunday about 150 officers from various police services and department were deployed in the city center and detained 310 individuals, which resulted in three arrests; two for outstanding court orders and another for immigration violations.
On Saturday the Police conducted inspections at the open air market on Michail Voda Street in Agios Panteleimonas. 31 people were detained and two arrested, one for possession of 800 counterfeit cigarettes and another for immigration violations. The Municipality of Athens has also received three large trucks with counterfeit goods that it will dispose.
