The atmosphere was tense in parliament as the Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and the leader of the Opposition Alexis Tsipras had a heated discussion over investments. Mr. Tsipras claimed that the government “attracts pirates and not investors”, to which the PM responded that his cabinet is “working day and night to bring investors when others burn businesses at night”.

Mr. Samaras then attacked “those who regularly fight to get rid of investors and resort to terrorism and destroying investments”, before suggesting that SYRIZA is subverting his cabinet’s efforts by “legitimizing those who set fires”, in effort to connect the Opposition to the recent attack on the mining site of Skouries. Mr. Samaras then stated that his government will “not back down from the threats”, referring to SYRIZA and escalating tension.

The leader of the Opposition claimed that the PM was morally and physically responsible for the country’s dire situation. Mr. Tsipras also condemned the PM for turning his government’s plan into “scrap paper”. Regarding investments, Mr. Tsipras explained that they subverted by the government’s “buddies” and that his party is open to “investors from abroad, but you attract pirates”. The SYRIZA leader warned the PM that any new measures would mean he would have to “follow the example of his likeminded Argentine leader and leave by helicopter”, before adding that “we wish that is not the case”.
