In response to the ongoing horse meat scandal across Europe, Prosecutor P. Fakou has ordered a series of checks to determine the extent of the contamination in Greece.
Following a reports by the Greek food authority (EFET) and the press, the Prosecutor ordered the Financial Police to perform checks to determine if and what quantities of food contaminated with horse meat, including ground beef, have been imported.
In its report EFET highlights data on specific import firms, for whom there are indications that they imported suspicious meat. Reports in foreign and domestic press also consider Greece to be a station in the distribution of horse meat, without however being able to determine the quantity that was consumed.
The cold store of an import firm in Athens was raided and samples of suspicious products have been sent to the State General Laboratory to determine if there is any horse meat contamination. The prosecution will decide upon future action after receiving and analyzing official data.
