The ATEbank and Postbank in Velvendo of Kozani was the target of about ten armed thieves. The group split in two teams and raided the two stores for cash. The groups of three to four people were armed with Kalashnikov assault rifles and hid their faces with masks and hoods.
They smashed their way through the bank’s central door with a sledgehammer and after immobilizing staff, they took off with as-yet unknown sum of cash. At the same time, the other team was robbing the Postbank.
According to police sources, one of the armed robbers was arrested in Kozani and a further three were apprehended in Veria. The robbers escaped Velvendo in pick-up trucks and headed for the Pieria mountain range. The police are conducting a huge operation for the arrest of the rest.
