The head of the Police’s Cyber Crime Unit E. Sfakianakis testified as a witness before the Preliminary Committee for the “Lagarde List” scandal. Mr. Sfakianakis insinuated that the list was copied from CD to USB flash drive, so that the list can be edited, as it appears to have been done so multiple times.
When asked whether the transfers from one medium to another demonstrate intention to distort, Mr. Sfakianakis responded that it was the obvious answer. He further explained that the combination of transferring the original CD and losing it is “suspect”.
According to Mr. Sfakianakis, the creation of the second USB copy is suspicious, since means we cannot know when the original USB copy was created or accessed. Mr. Sfakianakis was quick to add that anyone could effortlessly edit dates and information with a simple program, so no crime lab in the world can be certain about the USB drive, without the data in its original format, as it was first received.
Without the original CD that Mr. Papakonstantinou received, there is no way to be certain how many times the data was edited, before it reached the hands of Mr. Diotis. Mr. Sfakianakis’ testimony casts doubts on the former Minister’s excuse that the CD-to-USB transfer was made “because it was a safer medium and to have a copy of the data received”.
