On Tuesday, early August, the Ministry of Finances announced that only 70% of tax returns have been submitted.

In the past few decades rarely has the deadline for the submission of tax returns been extended until the end of August!

Usually the submission deadlines were extended until the end of May each year, or early June the latest, for obvious reasons.

It is unfortunate that this delay is occurring with the major financial crisis in full swing and at a time when the Greek state has countless needs.

Worst of all is that the delay is secondary to the gruesome political calculations or electoral planning, which is are far away from the general interests of the country.

We are also being told that there are similar problems with the mailing out of the ENFIA bills, the tax on real estate.

According to some, the bills will be sent out in early September, unless general elections are called in the meantime. In that case the bills will be sent out after the elections.

These are clearly unacceptable and questionable choices that have no place in the present circumstances of the major financial crisis.

With the situation as is, one would think that the Ministry of Finances would literally be clamoring to collect taxes on time and not delay or postpone the collection for political reasons.

The new political supervisor of tax collection, who happens to come from the tax-collection sector, understands the meaning and value of collecting taxes on time.

We also assumed that these questionable practices are incompatible with the ethos of the Left – as the current governors often claim.
