The ease and speed with which the government is opening new fronts is verging on the absurd. At a time when where are up against a wall, trying to come to an agreement with our creditors to limit the credit crunch, we open up a new conflict with the Americans.

Only a few weeks ago the government banked on American support to counter the European pressure, but now with the legislative regulation that will release Savvas Xiros, it has managed to create tension in Greece’s relationship with the superpower.

For better or for worse it ignored American sensitivities for the perpetrators of terrorist attacks against American citizen and despite the warning, it insisted and continued to insist upon this. Consequently, Washington reacted, leaving open the possibility of further complications, should Xiros be released.

It is clear that the government has not prioritized its choices. Both in domestic affairs and the international front, it is starting minor issues, compared to the major problems in Greece. At the same time that it insists upon the geopolitical strength of the country, as a counterbalance to the critical financial situation, its actions weaken it position and is shaking alliances, which is absolutely needs.

It also insists upon ignoring historic precedence, that have painfully proven time and again that whenever a Greek government has ignored its alliances and the international balance of power, the country has paid it dearly. While it is clear that the major issue of the country and the government is to achieve an honest agreement with the Europeans and the IMF, in order to overcome the deadlock, it is focusing on sensationalist actions and the appeasement of its political clientele, ignoring the side effects that are caused.

Whether some of the government officers like it or not, the country’s international alliances are more important if and when a prisoner is released. And if they cannot understand it, then it is the prime minister’s duty to enforce it upon them.
