In an interview to Deutsche Well, SYRIZA MEP Giorgos Katrougalos clarified that his party intends to respect the agreements with Greece’s creditors and not take any unilateral measures.

Mr. Katrougalos however noted that this would only occur until the deals are changed to reflect mutual interests, as he estimated that if the agreements remain as is, Greece will not be in the position to pay off its debts.

The Greek MEP further stressed that should his party come to power it will adopt a different negotiation strategy than that of Antonis Samaras. Mr. Katrougalos argued that since Europe is divided in creditors and debtors, he proposes a summit like one that took place in London in 1953 and which saw Germany’s war debts slashed.

In his interview he also expressed his belief that the European Central Bank must issue European treasury bills and repeated his party’s commitment to maintaining Greece’s position in the Eurozone and supporting the common currency.
