New cases of infection from the West Nile virus have been reported in Athens (four) and Thessaloniki (two), creating concern. In three cases the patients showed serious symptoms on the nervous system (encephalitis), while the rest have demonstrated mild symptoms (fever, stiffness, etc).

The Greek Thalassaemia Federation has demanded that the Ministry of Health launch an immediate investigation and examination. The molecular examination for the virus will take place by next week, especially in blood donors and visitors in areas where these cases have been reported, to safeguard blood donations.
