In the heated debate in Parliament on the third bailout agreement, the Minister of Economy Giorgos Stathakis argued that the new program will bring a milder fiscal consolidation.

Mr. Stathakis explained that comparing the new bailout with the previous bailout agreement is “excessive” and that “under the present circumstances and given the restrictions” the agreement reached between Greek government and institutions was the best possible.

Nevertheless the Economy Minister admitted that the new bailout agreement includes “huge divergences and compromises” from what the government wanted to do.

In concluding his speech, Mr. Stathakis referred to alternative approaches to the negotiations and whether there were alternative, viable solutions closer to what the government aimed for in the negotiations.
