The President of Democracy Karolos Papoulias commented that the overthrow of democracy “cannot be forgotten or embellished over time”, in reference to the 47th anniversary of the seven-year military dictatorship that established itself on the 21st of April in 1967.
Mr. Papoulias added that “not only because the dark seven-year period led to the tragedy in Cyprus, but also because our country lost valuable time going backwards instead of forwards”.
After praising the efforts, sacrifices and struggles of those who resisted the dictatorship, the President noted that “on days like these we remind ourselves that Democracy was not given to us, but it was conquered and it cannot exist without a lot of work”.
