Prosecutor Virginia Sakellaropoulou who is handling the trial of businessman Makis Psomiadis has suggested that the defendant be found guilty of attempted extortion, corruption and repeated bribery, while being found innocent of forming and managing a criminal organization for illegal gambling and money laundry.

Mr. Psomiadis is facing felony charges of establishing an illegal betting ring with other team managers. The prosecutor also addressed hefty charges to six of the other defendants: Yannis Papakostas, Konstantinos Riavoglou, Thomas Mitropoulos, Giorgos Christovasilis, Dionisis Kotoulas, Periklis Amanatidis and Vangelis Agelis.

The prosecutor proposed a verdict of innocence for the remaining three defendants Dimitris Dimitriou, Giorgos Havenetidis and the son of Mr. Psomiadis, Stavros Psomiadis. The prosecutor was critical of the stance of the former president of Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) Sophocles Pilavios, whom she characterized as “a vulnerable and yielding man who offered nothing to the [judicial] procedure”.
