The Golden Dawn member Athanasios Tsorvas is believed to have accompanied Giorgos Roupakias to Amfiali where Pavlos Fyssas was murdered on the 17th of September. In his deposition Tsorvas denied being a member of the ultra nationalist party and that he simply «helped out».
According to police surveillance Tsorvas contacted Roupakias at least twice after the murder. The self-confessed murderer contacted Tsorvas to inform Golden Dawn’s Nikea head Giorgos Patelis of the murder, with Patelis instructing Tsorvas to never call him again.
Tsorvas claims that he met Roupakias on the night of the murder because he was under the impression that they were going to hand out fish, as they had done so in the past. The unemployed suspect claims to be apolitical and participate in Golden Dawn food packaging and distribution events.
He admitted to being a part of security for the Nikea offices, “to watch out for problems with anarchists” and that he responded to an 11pm message sent by Golden Dawn, urging nearby members and supporters to “come to the offices to help”.
When asked why he smashed and threw his mobile phone away after a warrant for his arrest was issued, he responded that it was a spontaneous act of rage and that he was afraid and did not want to be implicated with Golden Dawn.
The investigative judges were not convinced by Tsorvas’ explanations and decided to detain him until the trial.
