Three ELSTAT executives, former head Andreas Georgiou, National Account Director Konstantinos Molfetas and the head of Statistics Research Directorate Efstathia Xenaki, have been charged with artificially bloating the country’s deficit in 2009.

The prosecutor Grigoris Peponis has also asked that possible instigators who asked the defendants to bloat the deficit be identified, since their actions lead Greece to resort to the IMF for a bail out.

Former PM G. Papandreou issued a statement to cover ELSTAT’s president, blaming the Karamanli administration. Mr. Papandreou defended the ELSTAT leadership “for trying to comply with the rules and to restore transparency and credibility”. Mr. Papandreou also accused the prosecution for being biased against PASOK.
