The Minister of Finance Euclid Tsakalotos warned that the “rules-are-rules agenda” will sooner or later result in the break up of Europe and urged for a a new economic policy that will favor growth and reducing unemployment over inflation and deficits, in order to curb the rise of extremist political forces in Europe.

According to the Greek Minister’s article, published article on Open Democracy, the main argument in the “rules-are-rules” narrative is that the European Union is based on rules and regularly changing them my undermine the credibility of the EU and the euro. The Minister adds that “the North are tired of “bailing-out” those in the South that either cannot or are unwilling to abide by the rules. There are limits to solidarity and any further weakening of the rules provides grist to the mill of the populists”.
