The final results of the first round in the leadership elections of the main opposition party New Democracy were announced on Tuesday evening, with Evangelos Meimarakis and Kyriakos Mitsotakis progressing to the second round, on the 10th of January.

In Sunday’s election, which saw about 400,000 voters participate, Evangelos Meimarakis received 160,823 votes (39.8%), Kyriakos Mitsotakis 115,162 votes (28.5%), Apostolos Tzitzikostas 82,028 votes (20.3%) and Adonis Georgiadis came in last with 46,065 votes (11.4%).

Although Mr. Georgiadis has since announced that he will support Mr. Mitsotakis in the second round, Mr. Tzitzikostas – who had high hopes of making it to the second round – has not commented. With Mr. Mitsotakis having received about 50,000 votes less that Mr. Meimarakis, support from Mr. Tzitzikostas could tip the balance either way.
