A comparison of the Hardouvelis email and the troika’s proposal, which To Vima revealed, illustrates the huge cost of the indecision, delays and lack of a specific plan and negotiation tactics. The time wasted since the declaration of elections did not just exacerbate the economy dramatically, it not only gave birth to a credit crunch, but it also removed all traces of credibility from the Greek political leadership, towards our partners. As a result, they demand many more measures, with a greater social cost, in order to approve funding towards our country.
Even if some of their demands are smoothed out, should the negotiations continue, the cost of the economy and society will be extremely high.
Once again, it has been proven that wasting time on partisan and political ends always works against us. Every time this happens, the solution we end up with is worse than the one we were previously offered…
The government and Prime Minister trapped themselves with their promises and big words of a political negotiation, a change of correlations in Europe, nonexistent alliances and trapped the country on a slippery path. The worst of all though is that they seem unable to manage this situation and continue to sway between a painful agreement and a rupture with Europe. Already the delay in the IMF payment has generated a slew of scenarios and encouraged the uncertainty experienced by the country and people.
Tomorrow’s discussion in Parliament may perhaps offer an opportunity, since the Prime Minister has the initiative, to overcome the sensationalism and the clash for domestic consumption, and seek out a greater consensus. It is also an opportunity for the opposition leaders to set aside the easy oppositional tactics and consent towards the creation of a national negotiating front. The economy, society and the country as a whole has no more room for pointless political games. Even now, in the final hour and one step before a collapse, they must all assume their responsibilities, with Mr. Tsipras first of all, and plot a course for national consensus and reconstruction.
