The Attorney General of the European Court of Justice commented that EU legislation on collective dismissals is not compatible with Greek law, which requires that employers seek ministerial approval.

Under Greek legislation, the Minister of Labor may approve of collective dismissals based on labor market conditions, the state of the business and the interests of the national economy.

The Attorney General’ made the comment in relation to the appeal launched by AGET Iraklis (owned by French transnational group Lafarge) at the Council of State against the Labor Minister, which had rejected a restructure plan that included collective dismissals.
