National Women’s U19 Water Polo team at the top of Europe

The Greek Water Polo team defeated Italy 6-7 in the final of the FINA Women’s U19’s European Junior Championships that took place on Rome, thus becoming European champions. Greece’s Eleftheria Plevritou was named MVP of the tournament.

While Greece mostly had the lead in the game, hosts Italy put up a fierce defense for most of the match. With a two-point lead in the third quarter though, Greece managed to hang on and bagged the gold. Spain came in third, after defeating Hungary (7-6), while Russia finished fifth, on top of the Netherlands after a penalty shootout (11-10). The British team ranked 8th, after defeating Ukraine (8-7) on Sunday.

In 2013 the U17s came first in the European Junior Championship that took place in Turkey, making this the ninth gold medal for the Women’s Polo team in all categories and major competitions.
