Despite SYRIZA’s initial approval and support of independent MP Odysseas Voudouris’ candidacy for regional governor in the upcoming elections, reaction from within the opposition party have forced the leadership to reconsider.
The former PASOK and DIMAR MP was originally nominated as SYRIZA’s candidate in Peloponnesus, however the vas majority of the party’s local members have reacted to the prospect. SYRIZA’s leadership is not determined to withdraw its support, but it also cannot ignore the controversy Mr. Voudouris’ nomination has created.
Those arguing against SYRIZA supporting the independent MP in Peloponnesus claim that his nomination will divide the party and send a wrong message to potential voters.
SYRIZA recently withdrew support from Giorgos Karypidis in the upcoming elections, due to anti-Semitic comments he made on his facebook account.
