After being planned for months, if not years, the much-announced plan for the abolition of 23 organizations and bodies, which could not be implemented until now, is entering its final stage. It is the first serious attempt to bring some order to the multitude of organizations that were established in the good old days so that the dominant political parties could fulfill party and clientelist obligations.

After five years of the crisis it is clear that despite the many efforts to tackle the bureaucratic beast, it is stronger than ever. There is tens, if not hundreds of organizations that either don’t have any reason to exist, or their project could be handled by existing bodies. Beyond the pressure from the troika and independently of the bailout commitments, the reconstruction and reorganization of the public sector is an essential prerequisite to support growth and to put a stop to the people’s unending suffering.

Fir years they have been discussing and announced the reduction of bureaucracy, the simplification of procedures, but few things have come to fruition. Tens of laws are being votes, thousands of (supposedly) interpretive directives are issued, but the paper kingdom and the endless burden live on. No government and no minister, regardless of how able or determined he may be, can apply even the best of his promises if there is not an efficient and capable management to implement them. It is necessary to carry out the plan to reconstruct the public sector that started with the abolition of 23 bodies; without any clientelistic or partisan commitments, with an objective evaluation and the best possible use of employees who have the qualities and skills to help in the reconstruction of the country.
