The leader of the main opposition Alexis Tsipras will travel to the Vatican where he will meet with Pope Francis, in the first meeting between the head of the Roman Catholic Church and the leader of a Left party. Immigration, social justice, combating unemployment and the need for peace in the Middle East are on the agenda.

SYRIZA officers note that Pope Francis, who is also known as “the Pope of the Poor”, has been vocal in his criticism of the markets in contemporary societies and has requested that the conflicts in Gaza and elsewhere come tom end. The Pope has also expressed his belief that religions must cooperate to help towards establishing peace.

On his trip to the Vatican Mr. Tsipras will be accompanied by SYRIZA spokesman Panos Skourtletis and Walter Baier, the coordinator of transform!, a European network for alternative thinking and political dialog.
