Main opposition leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis held a news conference at party headquarters today on the disastrous wildfires that struck Eastern Attica on 23 July.

Mitsotakis said that as of today he is undertaking the responsibility, flanked by experts on civil protection, to redesign the country’s civil protection policy, and he underlined that the state exists to secure citizens and their property.

Mitsotakis said that the events have their own voice, and that it is merciless.

“It is impossible for me to understand how there can be political responsibility without a resignation,” Mitsotakis said.

“We are asking for the self-evident – security for the victims and their families. They do not want any more lies or ashes,” he said.
Mitsotakis also blasted PM Alexis Tsipras. “Tsipras was young and irresponsible, and now he is catastrophic and cynical.”
Mitsotakis also criticised the government’s earlier programme to legalise structures built without a permit, with the payment of a fine, and he showed reporters a newspaper banner headline reporting on the programme.
