About 100,000 pensioners will not be receiving the EKAS benefit in July, as the government begins to phase it out, as part of the recent bailout agreement.

In practice, the abolition or reduction of the benefit will result in the overall pensions of affected retirees to be slashed by 20% to 25%. The government will also begin withholding installments for the benefit that was paid out so far to these 100,000 pensioners this year.

The EKAS benefit will only be available to pensioners over the age of 65, with an annual net income from pensions up to 7,972 euros, personal income up to 8.884 euros and family income under 11,000 euros.
