The US State Department has expressed its opposition to the Turkish government’s decision to broadcast readings of the Koran from inside the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul.

The spokesperson for the US State Department Mark Toner stated that “we recognize Hagia Sophia as a site of extraordinary significance”.

We would encourage Turkey to preserve Hagia Sophia in a way that respects its tradition and also its complex history” underlined the US State Department spokesperson.
