Schäuble warns of a “limited” third aid package to Greece

The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung has reported that the German Minister of Finances Wolfgang Schäuble told Focus that he has not ruled out the possibility of a third aid package to Greece.

According to the report, this third aid package would be rather “limited” compared to the previous two, possibly less than 10 billion Euros. Mr. Schäuble also told the German magazine that Greece’s debt will become sustainable in 2022.

Additionally, the German Minister repeated that the Greek government must carry on with the implementation of reforms and stressed that the new aid package would include provisions to that effect. Mr. Schäuble argued that Greece’s future within the Eurozone depends on the implementation of the reforms.

After the German Minister’s interview was publicized, opposition leaders SYRIZA suggested that the possibility of a third aid package will result in further anti-social austerity measures and that despite the claims, the public debt will never become sustainable.

The Ministry of Finances responded to SYRIZA’s allegations and the German Minister by stating that Greece’s participation in the Eurozone is not questioned and that the last Eurogroup has confirmed Greece’s funding needs until mid-2015.
